In the city and at the marinas, you can generally walk right in and take the test, but to be safe, you are best off scheduling the test ahead of time. That way you can be sure to take the test the day you arrive, and if you pass, they supply you with a temporary license right then and there. If you operate a boat, you have to have a boater license. It’s the law. Without a Pleasure Craft Operator Card, or boat operators license, you’re automatically subject to a $250 fine.
