Located in central Saskatchewan on the Saskatchewan River, Saskatoon is the province’s most populated city as well as one of its most recognized. Saskatoon, however, is not a place that people tend to associate with boating. Nevertheless, personal boating is quite active in the area, on the area’s many lakes and rivers, and people come from all over to fish and boat. Other popular activities include sailboating, waterskiing, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, camping, hiking and so forth. In the city, visitors can take advantage of riverboats, including tours, dinner cruises and other entertainment on the water, including paddleboats, houseboats and canoes.
Like all of Canada, Saskatoon requires a boating license in order to operate a motorized boat. So if you plan to bring a boat with you or rent one from a charter, plan to have a license. If you will need a license but cannot acquire one beforehand, schedule an exam in Saskatoon coordinated with your vacation. This way you can take the boating license exam the day you arrive, which is little trouble for an experienced boater, and they will give you a temporary license to use right then. The actual license comes in the mail to you home address several weeks later. You must renew the basic operator license every two years, but the upgrade is a lifetime license that does not require renewal.

If you operate a boat, you have to have a boater license. It’s the law. Without a Pleasure Craft Operator Card, or boat operators license, you’re automatically subject to a $250 fine.
