Winnipeg is the largest city in Manitoba, Canada and its capital. Boaters recognize Manitoba for its many lakes, and Winnipeg is in relatively close proximity to many of them, including Lake Winnipeg and the Canadian Shield lakes. Lake Winnipeg is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world, and the Canadian Shield Lakes provide a wide range of geographic features as well as boating opportunities and a wide range of national parks. Winnipeg is a city with a wonderfully rich cultural tradition. A benefit of staying there is that, for instance, you get to experience the lake all day, and then you can come back and enjoy the finer amenities of the city in the evening.
In addition to the major lakes and parks, Winnipeg has boat ramps all around the city and surrounding areas that provide access to rivers, streams and smaller lakes. Wherever you plan to boat, Winnipeg requires you to have a boating license for most vessels, as does all of Canada, and failure to comply can result in a steep fine or other penalties. The boating license, however, is not difficult to get, particularly for experienced boaters. At Lake Winnipeg, for instance, you can take the exam any time during business hours, and if you pass, they provide you with a fully functional temporary card right then and there. In areas where testing is less active, including the city itself, you will want to schedule the test in advance so that you can secure a time and a spot.
